Gone are the days when home audio meant a stereo system in the living room with visible cables and black speakers on stands. Modern multiroom audio is invisible, coherent, and controlled from the very same system that manages the home’s lighting, climate, and security.

Zoned distributed audio: what it means in practice

A well-designed multiroom system lets each area of the home have independent content and volume, yet consistent control:

• In the kitchen, the podcast you’re following plays while you make breakfast
• In the main living room, background music plays at low volume during a meeting
• On the outdoor terrace, the speakers play the playlist for Saturday’s party
• In the primary bedroom, the system knows it’s time to sleep and gradually silences the active zones

All from the same app, or with a simple voice command: “Play jazz throughout the house, except the bedrooms.”

Architectural speakers: quality without compromised aesthetics

In-ceiling and in-wall speakers from brands like Triad, Episode, Sonance, and Klipsch offer a range of quality that spans from functional solutions for secondary rooms to high-fidelity speakers for the main living room that compete directly with the best conventional tower systems.

They install flush with the ceiling, with paintable grilles that disappear into the finish. In spaces where even the speaker rim must be invisible, invisible in-ceiling models are completely covered by the final plaster of the ceiling.

For outdoor areas —terraces, gardens, poolside zones— speakers designed for humid environments and direct UV exposure maintain full acoustic performance without degrading in the weather. In Guayaquil, with its characteristic humidity, using speakers not built for outdoor use is the most common mistake we find when “rescuing” previous installations.

Video distribution: the same content on any screen

Video distribution allows a single source —media server, cable box, Apple TV, PlayStation— to be available on any display in the home, without needing a separate set-top box or extra equipment in each room.

With Snap One WB systems or 4K HDMI matrices, content from the main media server can be watched in the kitchen, the guest bedroom, or an office waiting room. Switching sources is instant from the app.

Integrated with Control4, the system remembers which source you prefer on each screen: the bedroom TV always opens on Netflix, the living room one starts on the cinema audio processor, the kitchen one launches into the channel guide.

Integration with home automation

The difference between a standalone audio system and one integrated with Control4 is coordination with the rest of the home:

• When you activate the “Cinema” scene: the living room multiroom volume lowers, the home theater fires up, the lights dim
• When you activate “Night”: every active audio zone gradually lowers its volume over 10 minutes and shuts off
• When a call comes in on the phone: the audio in all nearby zones automatically lowers
• When the doorbell rings: the music dips so you can hear the video intercom notification

This coordination turns audio into part of the home’s intelligent ecosystem, not a separate system you have to manage by hand.

Sonos: the integrated streaming platform

For homes that prioritize music streaming (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music), Sonos amplifiers and speakers deliver an excellent user experience and integrate natively with Control4.

The advantage of Sonos within a Control4 system is that the user can use the Sonos app to control content, while Control4 manages volume, coordination with scenes, and integration with the rest of the home. The best of both worlds.
