The first thing pet owners want is to see what they’re doing. IP cameras integrated with Control4 let you:
- Watch in real time from your phone any area of the house where your pet is
- Two-way audio: you can talk to your dog or cat from the app and they’ll hear your voice clearly
- Motion notifications: the system can alert you if your pet is in a restricted area or if it detects unusual activity
- Historical recording: if something happens while you’re away, you can review the video from the previous hours

Temperature Control for Animal Well-Being
Pets are very sensitive to extreme temperatures, especially in the warm climate of Ecuador’s coast. Home automation makes it possible to:
“Pet” Mode in the Climate System
When you activate pet mode before leaving (or automatically when it detects you’ve left), the system adjusts the climate to maintain a temperature between 24°C and 26°C, no matter how much hotter than usual the day gets.
If the system detects that the indoor temperature rises above 28°C (an extreme-heat day or a power outage), it can send you an alert notification immediately.
Remote Control from Anywhere
From your office you can see in the app that the terrace is too sunny and lower the motorized blinds to provide shade. Or if a guest arrived and left the doors open, you can check from your phone that the AC is on.
Pet Doors with RFID Technology
One of the most elegant and intelligent solutions: automated pet doors with RFID chip access.
Your dog’s or cat’s collar has a small RFID chip (or you can use the ID microchip that many pets already have). The door installed between the house and the yard detects the chip and:
- Opens automatically when your pet approaches, letting it go out to the garden freely
- Blocks access to stray animals or neighbors’ pets that don’t have the registered chip
- Logs entries and exits with time and date
- Can be scheduled by hours: the door only allows yard access during certain times of the day
This solution is especially popular in houses with a garden in gated communities in Samborondón, where owners want their pets to have freedom of movement without compromising home security.
Integrated Automatic Dispensers
Smart food and water dispensers solve one of the biggest problems for pet owners who work long hours or travel:
Programmable Food Dispensers
- They can be set to release the exact portion at specific times of day (e.g., 7 AM, 1 PM and 7 PM)
- They send confirmation to your phone when the portion has been dispensed
- They alert you if the container is empty or if the dispenser malfunctions
- Some models have a camera to watch your pet eating in real time
Water Fountains with Level Sensors
- The system alerts you if the water level drops below a threshold (important for pets that drink a lot, like large-breed dogs)
- Fountains with water circulation keep the liquid fresh and prevent bacterial growth
Restricted Zones and Smart Alerts
Control4 can be configured to monitor certain areas and alert you when your pet enters places it shouldn’t:
- Unsupervised pool area: if there are motion sensors near the pool and no adult is home, the system sends an immediate alert when it detects the pet near the water
- Baby room or study area: door-open and presence sensors can monitor unwanted access
- Garage and tool area: potentially dangerous spaces for pets
Lighting Adapted for Pets
A detail few people consider: dogs and cats have sleep and activity cycles different from humans. Smart lighting can adapt:
- Nighttime pet mode: very dim lights in the hallway and near the pet’s resting areas (prevents them from bumping into things in total darkness)
- Automatic motion activation: if your pet gets up at 3 AM and moves around the house, a very dim light (5–10%) turns on in the hallway and switches off after 5 minutes
- Avoiding glare: gradual dimming of the lights is friendlier to pets’ sensitive eyes than abrupt on/off switching
Home Automation for Pets in Emergencies
This function is perhaps the most important: if there’s an emergency at home while you’re away (gas leak, flooding, extreme temperature), the system can:
- Send high-priority alerts to your phone and to the configured emergency number
- Activate ventilation if the sensors detect gas
- Automatically open the RFID yard door so the pet has a way out if it detects smoke
- Contact a neighbor or the emergency vet if numbers are configured in the system
